Two events occurred in 2003.

1. The first medical student, Mr. Carl Theivagt, from the Southern Illinois University (SIU) School of Medicine was sponsored by IHDN to Ghana. He performed his elective at the (1) Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra, (2) Ho Regional Hospital, and (3) Aflao Hospital from March 29 through April 26, 2003.


2. Three different groups participated in the annual mission trip to Ghana from August 2 through September 5, 2003. The fourteen-member volunteer team included two medical students from SIU-School of Medicine, and one pediatric surgeon, Dr. Ruth Mayworth. A summary of their activities includes:

  • Medical Outreach Clinics in Agbozume and other villages in Nogokpo, Kpedzakope, Vome Battor and Lotakor. We also saw patients at the IHDN Family Medical Center, Agbozume by Drs. Agamah and Mayforth, Mrs. Vivienne Dawkins and Ms. Angela Devine
  • Praise and Worship Band by IHDN team
  • Diabetic Training by Ms. Ekua Blankson
  • Computer Science training by Mr. Curt Catherwood
  • Sexual abstinence Workshop by Mrs. June Agamah and Mrs. Vivienne Dawkins
  • Marriage & Family Life Workshop by Dr. Edem Agamah, and Mrs. June Agamah
  • Women's Enterprise by Mrs. Darlene Lane
  • Pharmacy Tech by Ms. Angela Devine
  • English and Math taught by Ms. Bethany Catherwood
  • International Health and Tropical Medicine electives by Ms. Rachel Reutter and Ms. Kristine Mace
