A brief summary report of the activities follows:
-
Agbozume Clinics/Rural outreach
Started seeing patients in the Clinic at Agbozume, on Thursday, June 8. As expected, we were very busy immediately, seeing over 53 patients the first day. The students and Ms. Dawkins, the nurse from Chicago helped at the clinic, so it was not too bad. We saw a lot of malaria and returning patients with hypertension, most of whom have not been compliant. We also treated a severely malnourished one and half year old child. This child's mother died after birth and was left under the care of the teenage sister and father. Evidently, being poor and ignorant, the baby was neglected. Seven months ago, this baby was sent to the village medicine man and got some lacerations made on the belly, in an attempt to cure the abdominal distension. We fed and treated this baby aggressively. By the next day, there were signs of improvement [see the pictures - Please be patient, download may take a few minutes, thanks]. We donated baby food for this child and planed other follow up visits. We went to Nogokpo but most of the villagers had gone to the market. We only saw 23 patients. Interestingly, the villagers had to choose between seeing the doctor or selling their wares at the market for financial gain. In this case, the money won over good health.
- Church Service
We attended a church service which lasted almost three hours, enough time for two Sunday morning services in Springfield . Ms. Dawkins presented Hymnals from Moody Bible Church , Chicago to the choir of the Agbozume Evangelical Presbyterian Church. This church still needs a lot of help to stand on her feet. Sarah played her flute at this church service, and we hosted another one at Weta on Sunday June 18.
- Visit to IHDN Mission Hospital Site & Chiefs selling the land
We spent quite sometime interacting with the chiefs and the people of Weta at Dzadokpo, Weta, the site of the IHDN Mission Hospital . About 60% of the land has been cleared for building to start. We completed and signed the legal papers to obtain the title of the land.
- Building plans for IHDN Mission Hospital
We spent some time with the Architect and Quantity Surveyor, reviewing building plans for the proposed mission hospital. We need to submit the plans for a building permit before work can start. Please pray that this will not be delayed.
- Tutorials with Medical Students
Dr. Agamah reviewed articles on Malaria with the medical and pre-med students on the team. The burden of malaria on humanity became clearer to them after seeing the devastating effects on children and women in our clinics. So far, we have not encountered any patient with known diagnosis or suspected HIV/AIDS.
- English & Math Classes
Mr. David Miller and Mr. Mark Dedzo taught High School English language and Mathematics, respectively. Our goal is to motivate the high school seniors to excel at their final examinations and then enter the University.
