Dear friends,
Some of you may have wondered whether you will ever read a final report on our recent Mission trip to Ghana . You may have even given up hope on that happening. The fact is that we returned home safely on February 13th . I immediately went to work the next day, which happened to be my 48th birthday. I also did not recover from the jet-lag before taking that weekend call. In effect, it took me much longer time to recover from this trip than previous ones, let alone submit a report. When I finally recovered, I started working on other projects, including preparation for the June 2008 Ghana trip, so this report was inadvertently pushed to the background. I must apologize for this delay.

Details about each mission volunteer and projects follow:
  1. Mr. David Broughton – Road Construction and heavy equipment operator
  2. Mr. Ted Harvey – English Language, Christian Leadership training, Marriage and Family Life
  3. Mrs. Loiuse Harvey - Graphic Design and printing with “Adobe In Design” and the basics of computer science
  4. Dr. Edem Agamah – Team Leader

Road Construction and construction of drainage
We had big plans, to build the half a kilometer road to the hospital site within the time available to us. Unfortunately, our John Deere back hoe broke down. We could not get parts in Ghana . In Ghana and other parts of the world, Caterpillar rules, and parts are not interchangeable. We had to employ the villagers to provide manual labor, working with shovel, in addition to a small bobcat loader to transfer gravel for the road construction. It was incredible to see these folks work very hard to load the tipper truck. with the their shovels. We rented a motor roller and motor grader to spread the gravel on the road and also provide compaction. I am pleased to inform you that after work continued on the road after we left Ghana and very soon, they will pour bitumen on the road pave.

Connection of Electric Power
The original plan was for power to be connected to the building before we arrived. Because of the delay in construction of the Back up Generator room this did not happen. With our presence, the workers were able to speed up construction work. Similarly, the electricity corporation was able to install a new 315 KVA transformer and then connect power to the building. Getting power connected to the site was a big deal, because of the bureaucracy and over prized equipment and services. Thank God, we now have electricity on site. Eventually we will need to acquire back up generator because of frequent power outage.

English Language classes/Christian Family Life
Ted completed his English language classes successfully at the Somey Senior Secondary School . There were over 50 students. He went over materials that are relevant for their upcoming final year examinations. Ted met with the Christian Leaders to review aspects on Christian Family life and marriage, using “His Needs and Her Needs”. On their last day of discussions, the villagers decided to forgo this session to watch the soccer match between Ghana and Camaroun. It is like asking people to attend a church meeting on the evening of the super bowl.

Graphic Design & Computer Science
Louise hosted classes in “Adobe In Design” and “Basic Computer Science”. The class size for the computer science was much smaller compared to previous years'. In any case she was able to teach local staff how to use publishing software.

Church Services at Korle Bu
We attended church service at Accra Chapel Trust, Korle Bu on Feb 10. This is an interdenominational church on the campus of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra . This was my church home when I was growing up in Ghana as a medical student and a young doctor. It was good to meet with several old friends and colleagues. I also got the chance to share with the congregation what IHDN has been doing in Ghana and our need for doctors and nurses. We are praying that we will be able to recruit staff to help with the work of the IHDN Mission Hospital due to be commissioned on June 14, 2008.

I would like to thank all of you who prayed and supported our work. I invite you to visit our website www.ihdn.org to follow our progress. Stay tuned for the next report from the June 2008 Ghana mission team - see pictures.

God bless you all,
Dr. Edem Agamah
